Important Degrees

Today, our pastor (Randy Huddleston) preached on the topic “Degrees That Matter.” There are college degrees (important in some areas), degrees of temperature (might change the clothes we wear), degrees of tilt (too much can be frightening) and degrees of incline (the steeper the hill, the harder to climb).

But the most important degrees, the ones that matter in eternity, Pastor Huddleston pointed out, are the 180 degrees that we need to turn from our natural human direction so we head in God’s direction. God calls each of us to repent of our own ways, turn to Him, and follow His ways. He has revealed Himself and His way in Jesus Christ.

The Lord God almighty–He alone is God (Deuteronomy 6:4). Even our own hearts will deceive us (Jeremiah 17:9), so we need to trust God and not our hearts. As we grow in following Christ, we increase in the other degrees that matter–degrees of glory. “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV)

2 Peter 1:5-8 tells us we can grow by adding these things  to our faith in Christ: Integrity, knowledge of God’s character/words/actions, self-control, endurance, godliness (becoming more like Christ), Christian affection (really caring about others), and love. Increase in these traits is evidence that a person is growing in glory (Christ-likeness).

Pastor pointed out how each of us can become more of what God designed for us to be:

  • Stop multiple spiritual personalities (Love God with all we are; keep Him above everything)
  • Receive God’s truth.
  • Reject the ways of the world, the impulses in us that turn from God.
  • Accept His love.
  • Act in accordance with God’s ways.

Wow! That’s a lot of truth that will keep me thinking and feed my spirit this week.
