Of Rags and Riches

My ways are human—they are rags. They’re often foolish, hurtful, selfish, or twisted, and always imperfect. God’s ways (obedience to Him), on the other hand, are riches and treasures. They’re always good, perfect, loving, pure, generous, helpful, and wise. Why would anyone choose rags over riches? Who would want trash when God offers treasure?

Instead of choosing selfish, short-sighted “grabbing for all the gusto,” let me keep my eyes on the prize. Rather than coveting what others have, why not reach for what really satisfies—trusting God and loving with His love? Today, because the Holy Spirit lives in me, I can say “no” to self-pity, and acknowledge God in each situation. I can listen to what God wants to teach me instead of getting mad, grumbling, or blaming when problems come. I can exhibit graciousness instead of being touchy, irritable, or rude.

It’s more effort to go God’s ways instead of my own, and I often don’t recognize the choice. Nevertheless, when I do actually open my hand for the riches rather than grasping the rags, I find real treasure—valuables like godliness with contentment, peace beyond understanding, joy unspeakable and full of glory, and everlasting hope. And best of all, I discover fellowship with Jesus who fills my cup of life to overflowing.

Isaiah 55:8-9 “My thoughts are completely different from yours,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” New Living Translation
