John 14:15-17—“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit….” John 15:14—“You are my friends if you do what I command.” John 17:21—“I [Jesus] pray that they will all be one, just as you [Father] and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.” (All from the New Living Translation)
O Lord God, far beyond our understanding,
Far greater than our human minds can grasp,
Who could ever comprehend Your triune nature?
The more we know, the more is left to ask.
Speak, O Lord, Your servant heareth.
O let me hear and quickly obey Your call.
Tune my heart to ever sense Your love notes
And to delight in You, O Lord, my all-in-all.
And let me reach as well to those around me.
You beckon all to partake of Your union sweet.
You say, “Let’s be friends, united now and forever.”
Drawing near to You, we find our joy complete.
One of the things I learned at a recent retreat is that the almighty, one true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob who created heaven and earth, who dwells in unapproachable light—that God wants all who are willing to be His friends. Jesus (Y’shua) is the One who makes that possible and tells us how to become God’s friends. (See the gospel of John, chapters 14-17.)
