One of the Wise Ones

“Yes, dear friends, we are already God’s children, and we can’t even imagine what we will be like when Christ returns. But we do know that when he comes we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. And all who believe this will keep themselves pure, just as Christ is pure.” [1 John 3:2-3 New Living Translation (NLT)]

Thinking of keeping myself pure and Christ’s return made me think of the five wise and the five foolish virgins in Matthew 25:1-13. I want to be one of the wise ones of course. They were ready with extra oil when the bridegroom came. So how do I prepare as a “wise virgin”? Here’s something from Proverbs about wisdom: “[Wisdom shouts] “Come here and listen to me! I’ll pour out the spirit of wisdom upon you and make you wise.” (Proverbs 1:23 NLT) The 2nd Edition NLT reads, “Come and listen to my counsel. I’ll share my heart with you and make you wise.” If I listen to wisdom, I’ll become wise.

And what is that “spare oil”? Maybe it’s letting the Holy Spirit keep me abiding in Christ, showing His love, confessing sin and receiving forgiveness and cleansing, resisting the devil, turning away from lies, pleasing my Father, and walking in the Spirit.

  1. Hi Tricia, it’s very True what you shared, we all need God’s wisdom found in Jesus Christ, He Tells us to ask and we will receive, so many don’t ask so they don’t receive and not one of us was born with it so we need it, the Scriptures tell us it’s the main thing. ( see below ) As we age we mature in life wisdom and of course grey hair but with some if their focus is worldly so will be their wisdom, the Scripture you shared in Proverbs in context and in the original translation the K.J.V tells us those who reject God’s wisdom meaning His guidelines, will realise their folly as they will reap what they sow but we who have accepted and not rejected His wisdom, have come to real heart repentance, which means turning away from evil, will have all that He promises us Jesus our only Teacher will Teach us all things.

God’s wisdom is for any age and it does not age or go past it’s use by date. How good is that!

Proverbs 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

James 15: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Psalm 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you shall go. I will guide you with Mine eye.

Matthew 10:26-28 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. (Our Computers )
